LEADERS DECLARE THE WAR ON DRUGS IS LOST...
Former Presidents of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Switzerland, Prime Minister of Greece, Kofi Annan, Richard Branson and numerous other world leaders have called for a ‘paradigm shift’ in global drug policy involving abandoning Prohibition entirely.
“The global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world,” the leaders, speaking as the Global Commission on Drug Policy said this week in a detailed policy statement.
“Arresting and incarcerating tens of millions of these people (drug users) in recent decades has filled prisons and destroyed lives and families without reducing the availability of illicit drugs or the power of criminal organizations,” they noted.
“There appears to be almost no limit to the number of people willing to engage in such activities to better their lives, provide for their families, or otherwise escape poverty. Drug control resources are better directed elsewhere." (Transform: http://bit.ly/kVjnPS )
The commission drew attention to specific ‘obvious anomalies like the flawed categorization of cannabis, coca leaf and MDMA’ and attracted widespread support from mainstream commentators including former New Statesman/ Independent editor Peter Wilby.
“The arguments for legalisation are overwhelming. They do not rest on approval of drugs, or ignorance of their harms, or any wish to see their consumption increase. They are based on the argument that regulation would be less harmful to drug users, less damaging to society and less expensive to taxpayers than outright prohibition,” he said in an opinion piece in the Guardian.
“Nobody disputes the dangers of drugs, only the best ways of controlling them,” he added. http://bit.ly/lotOno )
