Clint Eastwood, OMG Tattoos, And Living Vicariously Through Others

Those of you who know me know that I have long been pondering and coveting a Clint Eastwood tattoo. Yes, Clint's ugly, wrinkly, slanty-eyed mug somewhere permanently emblazoned on my flesh. It sounds crazy, but if it's one thing I've realized after three tattoos, it's that they're not as serious as I once thought they were. Sure, they're forever, but that doesn't mean that every one you get has to have some deep and philosophical meaning. I realized recently that the tattoos I like most on others are their "random" tattoos or "mistake" tattoos. Like my friend Tim has a smiley face tattooed on his knee cap along with a tattoo that got sabotaged after a fuzzy drunken night (it was the Las Vegas sign that was supposed to read "The Fabulous Las Vegas," but now reads "The Fagulous Las Vegas"). Or my friend Ryan, who got "Play it Loud Fuckers" tattooed on his foot one night when he was on drank. He says he'll have to get it removed for his grandkids, but I say those are the ones that give us character. Or I saw this girl who worked at the makeup counter at the mall who had a portrait of Lon Chaney as Frankenstein. I can't imagine that has any emotional meaning to her, but it was nonetheless awesome

[Figure 1. Eastwood oozing cool in The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.]

[Movie Poster for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.]

Which is what got me thinking that I really wanted a portrait of a really iconic pop culture figure. Whether it be real man, or myth. After much deliberation and many worthy candidates (Humphrey Bogart, Bob Dylan, John Wayne, to name a few), only one remained in my mind: The Man Without A Name... that is, Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. This Eastwood Leoni masterpiece is a tradition in my family. My twin sister and I are often referred to as Blondie or Shorty, and the film along with it's sequels are often on the bill for our Forced Family Fun Nights. Aside from all of this, who oozes rugged cool and confidence more than that character [see Fig. 1]? The poncho contrasting with his cowboy boots and hat betraying his vagabond lifestyle, that skinny little cigar clinging for dear life between his tightly clenched teeth, those eyes fixed in a perma-squint on the wide open horizon, that intrepid contrapposto stance, need I continue?

I still have yet to make the final decision, as I am running out of places that I'd want to get inked. I don't want to be covered which is proving problematic, seeing as I have so many ideas for tattoos I'd like. Until I'm sure one way or the other, I'll just oooh and ahhh over these guys' amazing Clint tattoos. First two are my faves.

TRACKITDOWN LAUNCHES T.I.D. PRO...

track it down pro
trackitdown.net, the first dedicated dance music download store to launch in Europe, celebrates 7 years in the business by launching a game-changing new membership service set to benefit consumers and record labels alike.

With an emphasis on 'value for money' without harming the music makers, TID Pro is a new way for dance music fans to buy more music at a substantial discount enabling them to buy more of the music they love.

An innovative hybrid of club membership and subscription, "Pros" pay £10 a month allowing them to buy all their music at cost price. That means that full quality WAV files are reduced from £1.75 to £99p and 320 kbps MP3s are down from £1.49 to 79p.

TID founder Ed Real said;
"Customers know the frustration of deleting tracks at the checkout because they’ve simply gone over budget. TID Pro means their money now goes much further. It’s great for artists as they sell more and our unique model means labels don’t take a knock either. All labels will receive the same return as the full priced tracks so they can continue to reinvest in new artists and new music. We feel this is a groundbreaking development for the music industry which has traditionally associated discounting and subscription with loss in revenue."

To put it into perspective, a customer who currently spends £12.50 a week on downloads could save enough money to buy 17 more tracks a month with TID Pro. With Trackitdown.net adding over 10,000 new titles each week across all electronic genres, there’s no shortage of music recommended each week for TID Pro members to discover and enjoy.

Revolutionising the way dance music is bought and consumed with its exciting new more music service, TID Pro, sees Trackitdown continue to outstrip its rivals and fight piracy by offering the best music to download in the most appealing way.

Fatal MDMA
Police have warned of a potentially fatal batch of MDMA in circulation in the UK.

According to police in Islington, London, two clubbers were taken ill this weekend after taking the drug and are currently in a critical condition in hospital.

Detective Superintendent Adrian Usher from Islington Borough said, “All drug taking involves an element of risk. Users need to be aware that a potentially fatal batch of ecstasy is out there and understand the devastating effect it can have on their health.”

The batch is expected to have spread throughout London and police are warning clubbers to take extra care. Call Islington CID on 020 7421 0196 if you have any useful information.

MICKY SLIM, 'I'M A FREAK' VIDEO...

Micky Slim, Im A Freak, video, mixmash records
Micky Slim's new creation "I'm A Freak" EP released on Laidback Luke's Mixmash Records now comes with an extremely insane video. Girls pouring liquid latex on each other, spiders crawling on the eyes, crazy tattoos and distorted faces... This truly FREAK-ing video shoot was inspired by Micky's love for people who are alternative, who don't conform to society's "normal" values, those who dare to be different and stand out from the crowd, those who some may deem as freaks but who Micky sees as normal.

http://youtu.be/sXJqzcUdvyc

(Video director: Justin Hazleton)

Micky Slim has already put his I'M-A-FREAK-ness to the limit. What about YOU? Can YOU beat that? Show how much of a FREAK you are! Film yourself doing something absolutely out of this world, crazy and FREAKing strange/funny/alternative/scary/different/insane! Send us your videos in .mov format to info@mixmashrecords.com before the 5th of September! Later see the best takes in one FANS' VIDEO made by YOU! Time to be the FREAK-ing STAR!

LAIDBACK LUKE'S PLANS FOR 'NATURAL DISASTER'...

Laidback Luke, Natural Disaster, Interview
Veteran Dutch producer Laidback Luke is known for leveling some of the most explosive live sets in the business, as was certainly the case last month, at the main stage of Boom, Belgium's Tomorrowland Festival. Luke dropped his rendition of Kanye West's, "All of the Lights", "Timebomb" (with Jonathan Mendelson) and crowd favorite "Turbulence" his hit single with Steve Aoki and Lil Jon.

In the pantheon of Laidback Luke bangers, according to the producer himself, "Turbulence," ranks among the greats.

" 'Turbulence' is one of the harder tracks I've made," Luke told MTV News just before his set at Tomorrowland. "Steve is a big influence in that. When we made it, I could see him doing his stage dive and taking shirts off. And for me, when I play that track in my set, it's definitely a peak. I'll be jumping myself too, not taking shirts off or stage-diving, but Steve definitely adds up the energy for me."

With Tomorrowland now behind him, Luke has big plans for the rest of the year: He's linked up with British singer Example for a whopping single called "Natural Disaster," the instrumental mix of which is out already (and the version with Example's vocals has leaked online too). Judging by the TL crowd's response to the song as his set-opener, it certainly makes sense that Luke and Example are hoping to do more with it.

" 'Natural Disaster' is doing really well for me right now," Luke said. "We are shooting a video soon, looking at treatments right now. We have a couple of young directors we are looking at, so it's gonna be great."

And after the success of his remix of Wynter Gordon's "Dirty Talk" last year, he may come to New York to shoot the video for another collaboration with her.

"Wynter came through with a video concept for, 'Speak Up,' " the producer explained. "She wanted to have, like, a block party, and we are gonna shoot it where she grew up in New York."

"All the focus is on, 'Natural Disaster,' for the moment," Luke added, when pressed for details on the new single. "And then we'll go full force on, 'Speak Up.' "

While, like most dance music artists in the summer, he's busy touring the world in the world, but he did drop one sliver of a "maybe," EDM fans will be excited to hear: He just might be working with Steve Aoki again.

"DJs are working hard this summer!" Luke exclaimed. "We'll see after the summer is done, [then] we'll do more studio time."

DEADMAU5 INTERVIEW...

deadmau5 Interview
Dance music’s biggest star deadmau5 takes off the mask for an exclusive chat with 'Time Out Chicago' before his Lollapalooza show...

“How much does your head weigh?” asks Joel Zimmerman, mockingly throwing me the question he gets asked all too often. It’s the end of our conversation and he’s done talking about himself. When Zimmerman dons his much-talked-about mau5head, as he will for thousands of screaming ravers at Lollapalooza on Sunday 7, he transforms into deadmau5, the biggest dance act since Dutch trance megastar TiĂ«sto. Without the cartoonish rodent head, the tatted-up, nail-biting chain smoker looks more like the computer programmer he once was rather than the club-music rock star he is now. The 30-year-old is a frantic ball of energy when I reach him by phone in his Toronto studio. He’s knee-deep in all the gadgetry that will become the laser-light show at Lolla.

On the new live show
“Can you tell us about it?” I ask. “No,” he deadpans, followed by his Beavis-like rapid-fire chuckle. With a little prodding he opens up: “We’re all freaking out. It’s awesome…. Right now we’re working on the actual technology to control all the cool stuff. Otherwise it’s just going to be a lot of expensive stuff up on a stage and everyone’s going to go, ‘Woo… But what does it do?’ And, we’ll go, ‘Well nothing, because we can’t get this fucking thing to work.’ But we’re working on it and I think we’ll figure it out. My career depends on it.”

On being a gearhead
It becomes apparent that the techno toys trump the techno itself. Has he been a dance-music fan since an early age? No. “I’ve been converted. I grew up a little metalhead: Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, that kind of shit. I was a bandwagon jumper. If everybody in high school listened to it, so did I.” More so than the classic rave-informed tech-electro he makes, it’s the futuristic spectacle of the performance—and the requisite gear—that fuels Zimmerman. “I’m just a little artsy-fartsy computer dude,” Zimmerman says. “It’s not an alter ego. It’s not, Now it’s time for crazy time, put on a mouse head—adventure! I’m the same guy in and out of it.”

On the evolution of the mau5head
“Oh, wow, if I had a nickel for every time I had to tell this fucking story,” Zimmerman mumbles. His most recognizable attribute, the mau5head, has seen seemingly endless permutations: red with bugged-out white eyes, solid black with a glowing mouth, chrome. Most recently it’s become a glorified LED screen with pixelated lights for its eyes and mouth. “It was a 3-D model years and years before it was anything else,” he explains. Then a friend convinced him to turn it into a mask. “I wore it out for my first official deadmau5 gig, and everyone was looking at me like, What the fuck? It was a combination of that, the big brand identity, and the music, that pushed it all forward. It was so tongue-in-cheek, it’s like, No fucking prisoners. Fuck it, if I do this, I do this. If I fail, I’ll go 3-D model my head off till I’m old and gray and still sitting behind a desk. I’m happy either way. Now I can’t take the fucking thing off.”

On the Disney rumors
In May, spoof conspiracy-theory blog tropiganda.com ran a story claiming Disney bought the trademark to deadmau5. “Dude, that is such bullshit,” Zimmerman bellows. “Disney fell asleep at the fucking wheel when I trademarked my shit. I have a thing with a big grin and mouse ears. If you blacked it out, everybody would be like, Oh, Mickey. Someone over at Disney was taking a nap.” The only interaction deadmau5 has actually had with Mickey was a gig in Orlando at Disney World. “I’m thinking that I’m gonna go into the dressing room and the door is gonna slam shut and Goofy and fucking Minnie are gonna come out and I’m going to get a beat down.” He came home bruise-free.

On the fame and fortune
Does it still surprise him? “No, I knew it was going to happen when I was five,” Zimmerman says, dripping with sarcasm. “I’m kidding…. It was a total fucking shock, are you kidding me?” His fans adore him, often sending him their own renditions of the mau5head. As an example, he shares a story from last Christmas. “My mother goes on the Internet and downloads pictures of people with all their mau5heads and she made this massive, fuck-off poster of hundreds of thousands of mice—all different ones. Not a single one is the same. I love that about my image. How many fucking TiĂ«sto fans go to a TiĂ«sto concert with a photo of TiĂ«sto for a mask?”

ROCKNESS 2012...

Rockness 2012
Following the incredible success of RockNess 2011,

(personal highlight Laidback Luke smashing the mainstage rockin' Dirty Smart - Rave Knob tee http://www.dirtysmart.com/news_article.php?id=293)

festivals organisers have announced that the unbeatable ticket launch price of a mere £99 for a weekend camping and non camping festival ticket will return once again for 2012. Meaning fans will be able to enjoy the entire weekend for just a few more quid than the cost of a single day ticket for many other festivals.

This exceptionally priced ticket will allow Festival Fans to experience as described by the NME ‘the UK’s most eye-wateringly gorgeous festival site’ without breaking the bank!

Even better still, fans that want to come to a festival but find it difficult to find the funds all at once, will have the option to buy their £99 ticket in 3 instalments at the ridiculously low price of £33! Jim King, Festival Director commented, “We’re delighted to be able to offer this amazing ticket price. When you think of the quality line ups that RockNess has every year there can’t be a more value for money 3 day festival ticket in the UK. The offer will be limited so we advise everyone to try their best to find the 1st instalment of only 33 quid and book as early as they can.”

RockNess 2011 saw historic headline performances from Kasabian, The Chemical Brothers and Paolo Nutini, drawing the biggest main stage crowds ever seen at the festival. With stand out moments from Groove Armada, Magnetic Man, Glasvegas, Boys Noize, Emeli Sandé and Lucy Rose, to name just a few.

The cogs are already turning in RockNess HQ to make sure that 2012 will be even bigger and better!

MANCHESTER CLUBBING...

Manchester Clubbing
Dirty Smart has become sponsor of Manchester club event, Bitch, at Club Venus on the last Saturday of the month.

Yeah, we sell fucking great clothes, but that's not all we do. We bring you fresh clubbing news, find you free bootlegs to download, and now get behind the best events in the UK...

Where - Manchester
Event - Bitch
Club - Venus
When - Last Saturday of the month

http://www.dirtysmart.com/manchester_clubbing_bitch.php

BITCH by name and 'a bitch' by nature for becoming an infectious part of your party prescription once indulged! Stamping its authority all over the Manchester club scene hosting one of the coolest and ever popular electronic nights in the North West; BITCH is a force not to be reckoned with. This is a brand that is slicker, sexier, and musically more seductive than your average. A reputation that is grounded in filth through relentless and endearing line- ups, showcasing the dirtiest beats from the best international and break through names in electronic dance - BITCH wears the trousers when it comes to putting on the best parties!

By definition BITCH bares an empowering meaning and as a brand it certainly asserts such impact when unleashed upon its revellers. With its entourage of in-house BITCH girls lining its stage, the sexiest bad-ass beats abusing the sound system, all encased in an intimate and underground stunning abode: BITCH dominates the market as a playground for naughty nocturnal activity by being one of Manchester’s most popular and precocious monthly nights.

It was back in 2006 BITCH first dug its claws into the Manchester club scene, building up a highly credible name during its savage. Having graced some of Manchester’s most elusive venues including the infamous Sankeys, the Warehouse Project, One Central, Area 51, and its new residence of Venus; BITCH have made their mark as one of the few established underground nights that makes the art of getting down ‘n’dirty on the dance floor an integral part of its policy. Couple that with a stint in the glamorous backdrop of Ibiza hosting branded nights and boat parties; along with playing away from home in like-minded city of Leeds, Super Club Syndicate in Blackpool, and even Brixton Academy hosting room 2 for the Swedish House Mafia; the recipe for BITCH is an infectious flavour leaving a taste of wanting more!

With previous parties showcasing the likes of Laidback Luke, Kim Fai, Benny Benassi, Dave Spoon, Mark Knight, Funkagenda, Chris Lake and Herve to name a few; along with providing opportunity to push provincial talent in the scene; Bitch is in a league of its own when it comes to conjuring a contagious carnival atmosphere where the party is guaranteed to go off.

NEXT EVENT:

SATURDAY 27th AUGUST 2011: BITCH HAS PRIDE!

Prepare to stand proud as August bank holiday weekend sees Manchester transform into a kaleidoscope of colour, as the city centre celebrates the annual Pride festival. For the past 20 years Manchester Pride has showcased a series of events across the bank holiday weekend that celebrates the great diversity of the LGBT community. To add some feisty flavour to this year’s festivities, BITCH will be joining the party to promote dignity on the dance floor with an honorary celebration of repetitive beats. By dictionary definition pride translates as ‘the love of one’s own excellence’ and BITCH most certainly stands true to that definition. Having forged a loyal affiliation with its party people by delivering who is sought in the scene, enthused in a contagious carnival atmosphere - the bottom line is BITCH HAS PRIDE! Headlining this Bank holiday BITCH-fest and gracing VENUS with her fierce female finesse is DJ/producer and Toolroom artist KATE LAWLER! Since she burst into the UK’s consciousness back in 2004, Kate has worked harder than most at getting the world to sit up and take notice. Her relentless, never let them knock you down approach to work is the contributing factor to her meteoric rise. Successfully building herself a reputation as one of the leading female DJs in the country, by 2006, Kate held a residency at DJ Mag’s number 1 club in the world Sankeys, Manchester. She’s now rocked the UK’s top clubbing venues from Pacha, The Cross, Ministry of Sound and Turnmills in London, to The Arches in Scotland, Garlands in Liverpool and Lush in Ireland. Versatile, inventive, energetic and passionate, she’s kicked it alongside dance floor legends such as Sebastien Leger, Andy Chatterley, Nic Fancuilli, James Zabelia, Martijn Ten Velden and Deep Groove, impressing promoters and fellow DJs with her infectious style. BITCH proudly welcomes KATE and her vivacious vibes back to the decks, as she prepares to destroy the dance floor with the musical mastery!

Supporting her in the fronting the feisty female flair is SUZE ROSSER. A love for clubbing forged a love for dJing for this Jersey born talent! From a young age each weekend was spent sneaking into club nights, exposing her to some of the top DJs in the scene and fuelling her passion for dance music. Soon enough Suze was donning a pair of headphones before her dancing shoes and became a regular name on the local circuit, playing alongside acts such as Paul Woolford, Paul Thomas and Mistress De Funk. However, her major breakthrough came when she supported Pete Tong at the renowned Rhumba Castle party. Not being one to pigeonhole herself, her style leans towards House, Techno and Tech-house and it’s all about the groove for Suze. A more recent venture has seen her partner up with international DJ Lottie, who has championed her skills for a while. Together they have launched the new all female night Geisha. Geisha is run both in London and Ibiza and is looking to "Inspire and innovate females globally through music". The future is looking bright for this talented female artist and BITCH salutes her as she prepares to grace their stage.

Finally, putting the finishing touches to the main melodies are BITCH residents MARK KOVICH, LEMPO and PETE MOBEY. Also, gracing the ones and twos will be the winner of the infamous BITCH DJ competition. Room two will be taken hostage by VENUS residents ANDY CLARKE, ROB CALLAGHAN and the runner up of the BITCH DJ competition, delivering their usual bill of best in handbag house beats!

SO… join the party and celebrate ‘the love of excellence’ as this bank holiday weekend BITCH HAS PRIDE!

BURNING MAN FESTIVAL SOLD OUT...

Burning Man Festival
Over in the US there’s currently a parade of disgruntled ravers kicking up a fuss. No, they didn’t miss out on the rave-riot at last week’s Kaskade concert, they’re decrying the drama around this year’s Burning Man festival, which has sold out for the first time in its 20+ year history.

Set to go down once again in the Nevada Black Rock desert later this month, The San Francisco Chronicle reports that this year’s Burning Man festival has had its capacity limited to 50,000 attendees due to a permit clause with land rights holders, meaning the festival’s organisers have had to similarly limit the amount of tickets sold for the week long festival.

The cap on tickets has become a major point of conflict with this year’s festival irking lifelong Burners that missed out on securing their tickets and enabling a scalper’s gold rush of sorts with tickets winding up for sale online for prices in the thousands.

“People on eBay have bid more than $1,500 for a single ticket – more than four times the highest retail priced ticket at $360,” The San Francisco Chronicle’s story claims, going onto add that on StubHub – the very same website which caught the ire of James Murphy earlier this year – tickets to Burning Man 2011 range anywhere from $1,270 to $250,000. WTF?

The limited capacity and subsequent exorbitant black market prices for tickets have also raised concerns of increasing commercialism in the Burning Man festival which is praised for its community spirit and currency of trading and services.

We know that a few Dirty Smarters will be (or would have been) making the pilgrimage to Burning Man this year – there’s a reason why it’s our #1 'Festival To Do Before You Die'...

What is Burning Man?...

Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada's Black Rock Desert (also known as "the playa") to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever.

In Black Rock City, you're guaranteed not to be the weirdest kid in the classroom. You'll become a part of the growing community of Burners who are active year-round, around the world ... ensuring that the fire of Burning Man culture never goes out.

CHOCOLATE PUMA ARE BACK...

Chocolate Puma, House Master
Chocolate Puma are currently storming the Beatport House Top 100 with no fewer than five productions in the chart - four of those are from their latest House Masters compilation celebrating their 20th Anniversary of producing countless genre-defining records...

The hottest of these right now is the brand new rework of their 1993 hit as The Good Men, ‘Give It Up’ (2011 Edit). Already rising fast at number 8, with this update it’s sounding as vital now as it did 18 years ago and the chart doesn’t lie!

If you haven’t done so yet, you need to check this out and I’ve got the promo here for you to play with. Straight from their House Masters collection... so do get involved!

The Good Men – ‘Give It Up’ (Chocolate Puma 2011 Edit)

The Good Men’s seminal ‘Give It Up’ was originally released nearly two decades ago, reaching #5 in the UK singles chart, but more importantly turning a whole new generation onto the unique appeal of house music. “After we finished it we thought 'this is not bad, maybe we should release it'” The Good Men’s Gaston remember. “Our record company at that time didn't really believe in it but after plenty of persistence we eventually got them convinced to put it on a B-side. It ended up being our most successful record ever.”

Now, The Good Men aka Zki & Dobre aka Chocolate Puma have brought one of the most important dance records of all time bang up to date with an electric 2011 re-edit that presses all of the right buttons in the most emphatic fashion possible.

Of the 30 tracks on the album, 18 are brand new updates of their finest productions under their various aliases - Chocolate Puma, Jark Prongo, Klatsch!, René et Gaston and The Good Men.

Features the brand new For Your Love 2011, their 2011 remix of Boris D’Lugosch feat. Roisin Murphy ‘Never Enough’ and I Wanna Be U (Re-work) amongst more.

Enjoy!
