TOP 100 CLUBS...

UK dance music monthly DJ Mag has just revealed its annual Top 100 Club Polls, with a few notable shifts in the ranks.

2011 is the second year that the list has been decided by public votes, whereas in the past it was the DJs who picked the favourites.

So, what are the ultimate clubbing destinations for the people who populate the dancefloor?

Coming in at number one is Space Ibiza, home to We Love...Sundays, Carl Cox fiesta The Revolution Continues and this season, Armin van Buuren’s Wednesday night residency. Conspicuously absent from the top ten this year is London institution Fabric, consistently a favourite from the DJ’s perspective.

The gargantuan 5000-capacity Fabrik in Madrid claims the number two spot, with Brazil’s Green Valley ascending 50 spots in twelve months to third place. Last year’s #1 Sankeys in Manchester slipped to seventh position, while familiar high-rankers like Berghain, Ministry Of Sound and Amnesia were back in the top ten.

PERRY SLAMS CALVIN...

'FYI ALL UK & IRELAND RELATED SHOWS @CalvinHarris will NOT be joining in on the fun and has CANCELLED last minute,' announced Perry ahead of her Dublin show on Monday.

According to Harris, who toured with Rihanna in Australia earlier this year, the gig was made impossible by Perry's people who 'suddenly moved the goalposts'.

'I was to appear on stage with no production,' he tweeted in response to Perry, telling fans: 'It would have looked sh*t, sounded sh*t - trust me you would have been more disappointed SEEING the show than u are with me cancelling.'

Mrs Russell Brand then bit back with a catty tweet of her own: 'Funny the goalpost seems to be perfectly fine for New Young Pony Club, Yelle, Robyn, Marina & The Diamonds to name a few... or how bout Janell Monae and her 16 piece band.
'It's fine, I'm used to you cancelling on me, it's become ur staple!'

Peacemaker Harris, 27, went on to apologise to Perry's fans and attempt to justify his actions: 'Her show is awesome, you'll all have an amazing time without me. (especially w/o me DJing on a cardboard box in front of a pink curtain).'

He added: 'I am really sorry @katyperry I'm just upset because I really wanted to play but ur team made it impossible.'
'We tried really hard to sort it out, but playing side of stage for 30 mins, it seemed pointless me even being there. Didn't intend to cause offence or upset anybody.'

Harris went on to post: 'WTF are Katy Perry fans telling me to KILL MYSELF on twitter for? Seriously. I'm a producer making music. Leave me alone please thanks.'

Here are a few gems that caught my eye...

-@calvinharris you a idiot cancelling on @katyperry never even herd of you till she said you was on her tour go hide back in ya closet nob!
-@calvinharris your a gob shite you yenno!!! Your music is Shit CBA following you anymore What a fucking joke
-@CalvinHarris your about as sexy as a tub of dog shit with bird shit and cat shit mixed together with paprika and poured in top. Jock twat.
-@CalvinHarris FYI were not called 'katy perry fans' we are called #KATYCATS ! BOOOM! Sit The Fuck Down!

Lessons may eventually have been learned, it seems, when he finally tweeted: 'The whole KP stuff should never have been on twitter, I was trying 2 handle it pro behind the scenes but I wont let myself get ripped like that.'

More eye-catching, as far as we're concerned, are his posts since Perrygate, not least: 'Me and Charlie Sheen up in the studio with my new Glockenspiel making acid techno briefcases en route video coming soon.'
Let it be true, let it be true!

KISSY SELL OUT - WILD IN THE WAREHOUSE / REDRINKULOUS...

Buckle up - KISSY SELL OUT is well and truly back. This, the first double A-side single ‘Wild In The Warehouse / Redrinkulous’ is from his sophomore album ‘Wild Romance’. It’s Kissy on top form, with his eyes firmly focussed on peaktime floors. It does what you’d expect – blows the bloody doors off.

He’s only 26, but Kissy’s packed an awful lot into his short career to date. Whether he’s DJing to a packed out crowd, mixing avant garde new sounds on his weekly Radio One show, producing his own material or remixing for others, the results are always the same: Exhilarating.

'Wild In the Warehouse' and 'Redrinkulous' are undoubtably huge club anthems, and Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, Plaza De Funk, Rico Tubbs and Micky Slim are already playing it to packed floors. Both tracks get the full remix makeover with the originals being manipulated in every direction imaginable by this 7-mix package. Expect to hear these tracks out very soon. Indeed they may already be a favourite...

Over at Radio One, Kissy's now over one hundred shows in, and he has used it as an opportunity to showcase his own technical abilities, presenting a new Kissy Klub mix each week, a section of the show made entirely of his exclusive remixes made especially for the show. Along with his fresh attitude to mixing records, his amiable persona continues to draw thousands upon thousands of new listeners to his late night slot week on week. Fans not only want to hear what at Kissy has made, but also what he has found; he is a champion of new talent, and regularly plays tracks sent to him by bedroom producers along with tracks from more established artists and record labels.

When he returned to the studio to begin work on 'Wild Romance', there was one aspect of his career that Kissy took inspiration from – his radio show. In fact, he is sure that had he never been given the opportunity to be a weekly fixture national radio, this album would sound very different. “I weave in a lot of classical music and I think had I not done the radio show I wouldn't have known how to weave that in to a dance track. I'm so used to that, so what I wanted to was combine what I was doing already – writing my own music, and playing all my own instruments and composing it all – and mix that with the classical influence.”

2011 BEATPORT AWARDS...

The weekend just gone was a mammoth one in Miami. In fact, the celebrations are still going, following the big-as-they-come final day of Ultra Music Festival and Made Event’s 36-hour party The Lost Weekend. Amongst all the debauchery, the 4th Annual Beatport Music Awards took over the Gansevoort Hotel on Sunday 27 March for its first ‘live and direct’ ceremony.

Fresh from cavorting with Deadmau5 over at Ultra on Saturday night, club convert Tommy Lee was in charge of handing out the gongs. To no one’s great surprise, the mau5 claimed Artist Of The Year in the Community Choice Awards, with Swedish House Mafia’s arena-sized anthem One singled out as the people’s Track Of The Year.

The Top Sales Awards present an interesting picture of Beatport’s blockbuster sellers. Top Track Of The Year (based entirely on sales) was Tarantula from cross-continental production team Pleasurekraft.

2011 Creamfields drawcard Skrillex topped the dubstep sales category with Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (more fuel to the fire, no doubt), while pop-dance starlet Wynter Gordon was named Beatport Breakthrough Artist. While we’re talking Creamfields, Beatport’s staff chose Slovenian powerhouse Umek as their Artist of the Year, and you can see why next month.

Last but not least, the new category of Lifetime Achievement Award went to Carl Craig. The Detroit don was much in-demand at this year’s Winter Music Conference (“no beach, only beats,” as he put it on Facebook), going back-to-back with Luciano at Cadenza’s bash, repping 20 Years Of Planet E at various parties, and generally being a dude. Beatport chose wisely on that one...

DEADMAU5 BREAKS SILENCE ON UPCOMING ALBUM...

Just like clockwork for the past three years Canadian producer Deadmau5 – Joel Zimmerman – has dropped records collecting together his various productions and collaborations from each respective period. But while his output has been undeniably prolific, Deadmau5 acolytes have been itching for a rounded and more cohesive body of work from the Canuck producer, something which Zimmerman plans to deliver when he returns to the artist album format in 2011.

Speaking ahead of the Australian debut of his banging LED live show on the Creamfields festival tour, Zimmerman confirmed that he’s already at work on a new artist album, saying that in 2011 he wants to “make music, some weird shows and just try and get that fucking artist album out that I’ve been trying to do my whole life”.

As Zimmerman explained, the delay on a new fully-blown Deadmau5 artist album has been due mainly to his relentless, exhaustion-causing tour schedule which has seen the Canadian star criss-cross the globe with his monster LED/Rubix Cube live show.

“I’m probably the most transparent fucker on the internet. Whenever I have any free time I’m in the studio working on music. This is what I enjoy doing and I’m always doing it,” he said. “If I can finally take some time to really work on a project that other people enjoy as well then I guess it will be worth it.”

Discussing the direction of the album Zimmerman made it clear that while it was still early days he planned to keep the material all together and under wraps for now.

“I want to compile an album of, say, 12 things you’ve never heard from me before and that’s not some re-worked thing from two years ago,” he said of his LP ambitions. “I have my Soundcloud page where I put a lot of shit up but there’s some stuff that I won’t let anybody hear, stuff that I’m saving. I want it to have a lot more kick, you know what I mean?”

AQUASKY INTERVIEWED BY TILLLATE...

Tilllate magazine have interviewed one of my favourite electro groups AQUASKY!

Iv been a big fan of these boys for a long time, and one of the trio was repping Dirty Smart's 'Vinyl Rules' tee in this interview...

Tilllate: What’s your set up for making tunes?
Aquasky: Cubase 4 and Ableton rewired with Cubase. Mostly we’re running all VST software, but we have a bunch of old synths and other analogue hardware we sometimes use if we fancy it or the need arises.

Tilllate: How do you approach a track/remix?
Aquasky: We always have the same approach in that we get a few basic ideas down, and make sure the parts are really firing before we move on to arranging a track. Usually we set up Cubase and Ableton on a loop, wither 2/4 or an 8 bar, line up all the tracks underneath each other and get all the parts running together and make sure we get the groove locked down. Then we arrange it, often we may go back and tweak some of the sounds e.g. the drum sounds once it’s arranged to make sure it all sounds phat as possible. We generally try to mixdown the tune as we’re going rather than making a tune and “mixing” it at the end.

Tilllate: Favorite synth/ plug-ins?
Aquasky: We have found the Sonnox stuff to be really good, especially the limiter and EQ. Also, Cubase standard stuff as it’s pretty good – looks boring but does the job! Synth-wise, at the moment N.I Massive as it’s got the most flexible modulation routing and automation.

Tilllate: What you working on just now?
Aquasky: A remix for Engine-Earz experiment, one for The Squatters, two EP’s for Lee Mortimer’s Wearhouse label, as well as tracks on Passenger Records. So, Watch out for them and also the Black Noise sample pack for our sample label Monster Sounds!

Tilllate: What track changed your life and made you want to produce music?
Aquasky: It’s hard to pick one, but I guess it’s got to be something from the early 90’s, so maybe ‘LFO’ by LFO. I always found the clean sub bass in this fascinating!

HAS TOM CRUISE RAISED A MIXMASTERGENIUS?..

There's seemingly no shortage of celebrity DJs hogging the decks and clogging up Soundcloud with their 'mixes'. Indeed in the last year we've seen star CDJ turns from the likes of Dennis Rodman and Sasha Grey and now Connor Cruise, better known as the adopted son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

Yep, as reported by Bossip, the 16 year old Connor Cruise has turned to a life behind the decks and played one of his first public sets at a fashion launch over the weekend.

"The teen is paving his way as a DJ and spun some tunes at a fashion event in LA last night," the item explained. "Not that he needs the money as he has wealthy A-List actors for parents but he seemed to enjoy himself while spinning the decks."

We'll hold our breath in hope that this is the beginning of a burgeoning trend of Scientologist DJs... lol.

DIRTY SMART'S SKY 1 DEBUT…

Elements of my job really turn me on. In particular, indirect product placement.
For example; last year I was vegetating on my couch, watching ‘Friday Night with Jonathan Ross’. The camera panned the studio audience and rested on a bloke rockin’ none other than Dirty Smart’s ‘High On Life’ tee!
No idea who that geezer was but Dirty Smart LUVS YA!

So, yesterday I received a text from a friend of the fam, simply saying, “Dirty Smart on Louie Spence...”
My palms started sweating... I had visions of Louie or that Andrew Stone character prancing around, doing pirouettes and stuff, rockin’ DS.

FYI, I’m not in the slightest bit homophobic; HOWEVER, Dirty Smart was created for the “cool cats” of today’s youth. I have a very clear marketing strategy and if certain individuals sport the brand, it can cause irreparable damage (Louie Spence, Andrew Stone, Guetta, Alex Reed, Harry Potter, Will.I.Am, Osama, David Platt e.t.c)

If my vision was a reality, Dirty Smart was over...
Credibility can take years and years to earn, and be shattered in an instant.

Anyways, I jumped in my car and headed for my folks to rinse SkyPlayer, in an attempt to confirm or disprove the tip off. 6 hours later I found the footage...

LUCKILY my fave Hip Hop/ Grime duo ‘WIZARD SLEEVE’ were on the show a few weeks ago, and Mike Beatz was rockin’ Dirty Smart’s ‘Fiend On The Club Scene' Hoodie!

HUGE sigh of relief, VERY funny footage, and Dirty Smart’s DEBUT on Sky 1!

Mad props to Lex-One & Mike Beatz, Dirty Smart LUVS YA!

LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY DIES OF HEART FAILURE...

Sad news of another death in the music industry. This time it's one of the original voices of disco. The vocalist behind many timeless dance classics, including the 1980 disco hit 'Love Sensation' and the voice of many house classics from Black Box to Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch, has died from heart failure at the age of 64.

She recorded her first single in 1971. At the end of the decade she sang backing vocals on Dan Hartman's 'Re-Light My Fire' who then helped to pen and create what became her greatest hit 'Love Sensation' and helped galvanise the house and disco movements.

The Track was also brought back to life in 1991 when Black Box sampled her on 'Ride On Time' and she also appeared on the track Good Vibrations by Marky Mark.

In more recent years Loleatta recorded a cover of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' for the Madonna tribute album 'Virgin Voices'. She was also sampled on the Whitey Houston 2009 recording of 'Million Dollar Bill'.

The electroinic music community will miss one of its original and all-time greatest voices.

MFM SHOW DS SOME LOVE…

At Dirty Smart we will never pay for editorial. Why? Because if you’ve got something great, you shouldn’t have to pay to ram it down people’s throats.

To date we have appeared numerous times in: DJ Mag, Mixmag, Zoo, Nuts, Partysan (front cover), 69/247, Tilllate, m8, Urban Life, Bent, Arena, The Big Issue, Cosmopolitan (lol), & iDJ to name but a few; and guess what? The only thing that changed hands (at their request) was a couple of tees!
(FYI, before the joke fly in; the 'Cosmo' article was titled, "what to buy your boyfriend this Christmas"...)

Magazines have 3 different revenue streams. Retail, advertising, and advertorial (a mash-up of advertising and editorial).

I received a phone call last week from the magazine MAXIM. Good magazine, high readership volume.

The phone call went kinda like this...

Maxim Rep: “Mr Dirty Smart, we would like to feature the tee ‘YO PUNK’ as our top tee of the month.”
Mr Dirty Smart: “Good choice.”
Maxim Rep: “Thanks! We love what you do, and on a personal note you have great hair.”
Mr Dirty Smart: “Thanks!”
Maxim Rep: “So, I need you to send me a bit of info about “YO PUNK”, some press pictures if you have them, and *cough* 5 grand.”
Mr Dirty Smart: “In the quiet words of the virgin Mary… Come again?”

This is pretty standard, and it explains why some absolute crap gains publicity. It comes down to how deep your pockets are, and at the end of the day, if you throw enough shit at people, some is bound to stick *cough* Projects NYC...

What is ACE is when a magazine takes a story you send them, and the next thing you know it’s been published. No sweet-talking; no foreplay, it just happens.

What is EVEN better is when your flicking through a magazine and you find something you were not expecting...

Below is a link to an online magazine called ‘Mens Fashion Magazine’. I’m an avid reader as it give a real insight to top end fashion and some sneaky peeks at mental couture clobber. After checking out the Dirty Smart article on page 75 & 76 make sure you check out the article on Cipher (page 9). Bang tidy sneakers.

This will not only reinforce the vodka brand’s ongoing mission to create the most innovative and extraordinary nightlife experiences, but will also continue the awe-inspiring, globally recognised Sensation series. The event will be taking place at the country’s most popular music venue, The O2 arena in London - recently named International Arena of the Year at the Pollstar Awards.

Launched in Amsterdam in 2000, Sensation has taken the world by storm, touring the legendary nightlife celebration event to 21 countries to date, and counting. Filling stadiums and arenas with a sea of people dressed head to toe in white, from Madrid to Melbourne and Prague to Sao Paulo, the spectacle will now be brought to the UK for the first time ever by The Smirnoff Co. With the vodka brand’s history of creating one-of-a-kind nightlife experiences around the world including Smirnoff Experience, Smirnoff U.R. We are looking forward to delivering something very special indeed in August.”

“When I first started Sensation back in 2000, I always looked forward to the time when it would come to the UK, and knew it would be when the time, partner and venue was right. With Smirnoff on board to help us achieve this, everything has fallen into place and we’re really excited about how the event is going to be received in August.”

BUSY P RIPS INTO DAFT PUNK REMIX ALBUM...

Previously denying the likes of juggernauts Paul Oakenfold and The Crystal Method the chance to remix their iconic tracks, its been purported that the duo have nothing to do with their forthcoming TRON: R3CONFIGURED album, with head honcho Busy P claiming to Disney that the famous robo-lovers had nothing to do with the album. P released this statement earlier in the day:

“TRON R3J3CT3D

Dear Disney people,
You know i love you (we all do)
But Walt! Come on! How can you take my robots friends so far away from good taste ?

I am 100% sure the Daft boys were not involved in this side (sad) project.

Of course some of it is nice, and you know there are some of my friends on this CD.

But this is not enough!

A masterpiece like TRON soundtrack deserved the best and I am sad to discover the A&R at Disney records is apparently buying most of his electronic music in airports stores…”

No statement has been released by Disney. Probably because its being treated as nothing more than scandalous rumors, with the mutli-national company probably not even raising an eyebrow. Needless to say the statement shortly disappeared from the artyists blog not long ago not long ago.

CHROMEO MAKE WORLD'S SHORTEST ALBUM...

Chromeo have been working on what is possibly the world's shortest album - a 3 minute "minimum opus" called Drive Time - containing 55 songs with catchy titles such as 'Turn Left' and 'Follow'... can you see where this is heading?

Yes, the Chromeo Sat Nav voice has arrived complete with electro boogie musical accompaniment. The band claim, "with Drive Time each track has actually been written. Take ‘Follow’ for example, in its seven seconds, there is a distinct bass riff, vocal harmonies, a chord progression and a lead line. In seven seconds!

PACHA EGYPT'S POST REVOLUTION RETURN…

Pacha Sharm chief Maya Challita chatted to Skrufff this week about the fall-out from Egypt’s recent revolution and revealed that the Red Sea superclub remained open throughout the three weeks of street protests and chaos.

The club was never closed at any point, but to cope with the drop in numbers of visitors to Sharm we opened the indoor room and closed the main open-air room,”Maya revealed.

“Numbers for the entire month of February were very low, and we worked at 10% of our usual capacity, but as of this week, we’ll be reopening the main open-air room twice per week on our main nights of Thursday and Sunday. For the rest of the week, we’ll be continuing with parties in the indoor room, for the next couple of weeks.” http://www.pachasharm.com/

Almost 400 people died and over 6,000 were injured in anti-government riots in Cairo and Suez last month, which saw feared dictator President Mubarak stepping down on February 11 to be replaced by a military council. Maya said Sharm, remained entirely peaceful.

“The city and the whole Sinai Peninsula is quit isolated from the rest of the country and there were never any demonstrations or violent incidents in Sharm at all,” said Maya. “Only the local people discussed politics while for the tourists, Sharm was the same peaceful place as always just with less visitors,” she said.

Despite media reports of hundreds of tourists fleeing the country, Maya said one group of regulars remained undeterred.

“The British never stopped travelling to Sharm and were very supportive,” she said. “Since the first week of March, Italians have start to come back and we hope that Russians will follow very soon. We believe that the situation will be fully back to normal by April, which is the regular high season,” she predicted.

“It's good to react with the new generation of Egyptians who are all very open minded and enthusiastic to rebuild their country on a new basis, with no corruption, more freedom and democracy,” Maya added.

“You can see that the young generation have very similar aspirations all over the world wherever they are,” she said.

ANOTHER 'GREATEST DJ OF ALL TIME' LIST... YAWN...

Earlier this year clubbers vigorously discussed the results of Mixmag’s contentious ‘Greatest DJ of All Time’ poll which crowned the supreme master of trouse himself, Tiesto, as the best to ever grace the decks ahead of the field of nominees including Sasha, Sven Vath, Larry Levan, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Tony De Vit.

Now a similar list has been published online by Music Radar in an attempt to offer a new perspective on history’s greatest disc jockeys. Unlike the Mixmag list, this countdown of the top 20 DJs of all time has not been open to public vote, so you can take it with a few hundred grains of salt. Lists like these usually ignite some pretty interesting debate and it is Friday after all.

The Music Radar list is quite a comprehensive tally of turntable greats, with storied artists like David Mancusco, Carl Cox and DJ Cash Money ranking highly, as do innovative acts like DJ Yoda and Cut Chemist. As well as a few curveballs, there’s a very strong hip-hop presence in the list with Jam Master Jay, DJ Qbert and Z-Trip all storming the list. Indeed, it’s the one and only Grandmaster Flash that takes out the top spot.

1.Grandmaster Flash

MR DIRTY SMART & PUNK ROLLA DEFY GRAVITY...

It was a lazy Friday afternoon. Punk Rolla & Mr Dirty Smart were hanging out. Punk Rolla was deep in a synthesizer; Mr Dirty Smart was trying to disprove relativity.

Standard.

All of a sudden, each began floating, and 'Take Me Higher – Mischa Daniels', started blaring out of the sound system...
Strange things happen when these 2 get together...

PETE TONG'S IBIZAN PURE PACHA RESIDENCY CONFIRMED...

The rumours are true. Pete Tong is indeed moving his Friday night Ibiza residency back to the island’s oldest club, Pacha in Ibiza Town.

Pure Pacha All Gone Pete Tong will run from Friday 27th May – 30th September on a weekly basis, with the Radio 1 stalwart returning to his former home after several year at San Antonio’s Eden.

“I'm very excited and proud to be returning to host Pacha on Friday nights this summer” he says”. In so many ways the club feels like my 'spiritual' home. ‘Pacha all gone Pete Tong’ will be a brand new night with an adventurous music policy and a very fresh look. I had a fantastic 3 years with Wonderland but it's the right time to move on to the next chapter of my Ibiza love affair.... hold tight!”

“Pete is Pacha, Pacha is Pete.” says Pacha director Danny Whittle. “It all just makes sense - quality, style and so many other things. For me, he should never have left. Now he’s back and it’s not just about the return of Pete, it’s about Pete and Pacha making history – again. So, let the games commence, I’m just really happy to be part of it”.

BEATPORT DONATING 100% OF DAY'S PROFITS TO JAPAN...

Amongst the outpouring of support for those affected by the ongoing crisis in Japan, dance music hub Beatport is doing its bit next Monday 21 March. Beatport will donate 100% of its day’s net proceeds to Japanese relief efforts.

“Beyond the fact that electronic dance music as we know it wouldn’t exist without Japan’s contributions over the years – just consider the numbers 303, 808, and 909 – the ongoing crisis in Japan affects us all, on a purely human scale,” Beatportal writes.

Revenue will be calculated minus royalties paid to labels and artists. Donations will be sent to the American Red Cross, Mile High Chapter, to be directed to the Japanese Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief.

If you’ve been holding off on tune shopping, this is the perfect opportunity to spend big.

THE PRODIGY WORLD'S ON FIRE...

The Prodigy’s epic Warrior’s Dance Festival gig at the Milton Keynes Bowl from July 2010 has been immortalised a film, World’s On Fire, that will be shown at cinemas across the UK for one night only on 31st March 2011 (locations will be revealed at www.theprodigy.com)

The film will be shown in over 70 cinemas, with audio mixed in 5.1 surround sound by Liam Howlett for a truly immersive experience, and it was directed by award-winning documentary maker Paul Dugdale – with heavy input from the band. The screening will also include a previously unseen short film of life on the road during their Invaders Must Die tour in Brazil.

“A lot of thought went into the place where we could throw the best party” the band say of the gig. “We never wanted the typical stadium venue so Milton Keynes Bowl was perfect for our own Warrior’s Dance Festival coz it felt like a mad party in a field. The night was massive for us. It was important to us to bring a proper festival day and night for the people to remember and bring the same intense atmosphere like when we play Brixton Academy.... and it was. Standing on that stage was a truly triumphant feeling for us as the whole place kicked off, we looked out and we were fuckin proud”.

Watch the trailer below.

R.I.P INSTITUBES - "EVERYTHINGS FUCKED"...

Along with Kitsune and Ed Banger, Parisian label; Institubes was a part of the big three French imprints to (at least seemingly) make it big on the back of the ‘00s electro boom, pressing records from venerated producers like Surkin, Para One, Bobmo and imported stars such as Harvard Bass and Midnight Juggernauts. It therefore comes as a shock to today receive word that the label has gone under and will wrap up operations almost immediately.

In an honest and quite entertaining press release from the Institubes camp the reasons behind the label’s demise were laid out in clear detail including a ‘fucked’ industry complete with ‘A&R zombies’, bad business practices, ‘mutated eyeless bloggers’ and heavy financial loses.

“We’re closing shop because the operation is losing too much money, this much is clear. It’s always been a bit of an uphill battle,” the message read. “But it got worse and worse. At first it was fun to figure out ways to get people to check out our music. But once that’s done and you have something resembling an audience, it becomes apparent that this is not really your job. Your job is to reconcile the public with the very idea of buying records. All the power to you if you can bare it.”

Continuing the post-mortem on the label, the Institubes defended their decisions to keep their brand as much about the music as they could where other stables have turned to endorsements and merch lines to build profits.

“The fact that ours is a struggling industry, where 90% of your time is spent “staying afloat”, obscures an important fact: we are still playing by the rules that got us fucked in the first place. The way we do business is defective: our values are defective, our contracts are defective, our post-Napster economy itself is defective. I just read an article by a label owner who states that “anything we can do to stay afloat should be condoned”. I don’t think so, no. Staying afloat by any means necessary is a meaningless pursuit. The only honest way for a record label to make money is by selling records. We’ve always been uneasy about selling anything else.”

You can check out the full press release from the Institubes peeps below, it’s well worth the read and not only offers insight into what’s next for its stable of artists but there’s a few industry reality checks in there too.

Institubes: 2003-2011
So, the next Institubes record is not coming soon. And I can’t tell you how much it pains me to write these words. We’ve released many records in our (almost) eight years of existence and managed to introduce a number of excellent artists to the world. Good times were had and accolades garnered. I’m not so conceited nor high on my own supply that I’d try and talk up our “legacy” but I don’t think that in five, ten or twenty years I’ll look at our discography and cringe. Now I get to tell you, Institubes fans, friends and allies, that we have to wrap it up. Party’s over.

I could write ten pages about the realities and difficulties of the music business but you’ll only get about two paragraphs and not much whining. We never lived those halcyon days some industry elders tend to rave about. We always moved through a post-apocalyptic, terminally pauperized landscape, complete with irradiated A&R zombies and mutated eyeless bloggers. It’s always been a bit of an uphill battle. But it got worse and worse. At first it was fun to figure out ways to get people to check out our music. But once that’s done and you have something resembling an audience, it becomes apparent that this is not really your job. Your job is to reconcile the public with the very idea of buying records. All the power to you if you can bare it.

We’re closing shop because the operation is losing too much money, this much is clear. Most of what we could have done to prevent or delay this outcome reside in two words: lifestyle and branding. Investing in t-shirts and co-branding, scoring “collaborations” or sponsorship deals with deep-pocketed companies. I have but a regret: we actually did it sometimes. We should have said no more often. Bands struggling to get together with brands, artists and audience deriving more validity from corporate interest than from anything else, bands happy to learn that in the future they would have to “take charge of their own promotion”: this wasn’t for us. In other words, on our small scale, we should have been able to carve a non-capitalist niche within the larger corporate world. I thought, being young and naive when we started, that “underground” meant just that.

The fact that ours is a struggling industry, where 90% of your time is spent “staying afloat”, obscures an important fact: we are still playing by the rules that got us fucked in the first place. We’ve always been uneasy about selling anything else.

And our current cultural economy isn’t healthy either. Consumer practices are fucked. You don’t need me to tell you that music is devalued. Not only because we no longer sell shit (and even when you do, it’s hard to shake the feeling that you’re selling free shit), but also because tracks are peaking faster than tumblr memes. In our historical moment, music is everywhere but second or third or tenth to many other interests and areas of culture. Fashion, Apple, video games, “devices”, social media, etc. And that’s cool, I guess. But I don’t want to have to be a function of fashion. Nor do I want to urge an artist to publish half-baked tracks every month in order to stay “relevant”. Depleted accounts is one thing, but depleted attentions?

I don’t really have a conclusion to this weird press release. So let’s end with two things I’m very proud of:

1. It’s nice to end on such a great year. In 2010 we have released two EPs by Surkin, two by Bobmo, two by Chateau Marmont, two by Rob, singles from Jean Nipon, Crystal, Das Glow, High Powered Boys, plus Bart B More, Para One, and Teki Latex EPs via Sound Pellegrino.

2. The label is gone but the artists are in top form: Bobmo, Para One and Surkin just announced the birth of their new label called MARBLE, home to their (many) upcoming singles. After the extremely successful release of the chart-topping “Calcium” single he produced with Strip Steve for Boysnoize Records, Das Glow has a new EP coming on Marble very soon.
Teki Latex and Orgasmic are now operating SOUND PELLEGRINO as an independent entity which has released the new High Powered Boys EP “Udon / Work” and a double compilation called “Les Jeunes Années” this week.
Jean Nipon has released his new EP “International Meek” a few weeks ago.
Cuizinier has recently launched his website and store lapizzachaude.com where he’s slowly unveiling pieces of his (great) upcoming debut album.
Para One’s album under the name “Slice & Soda” with San Serac is ready and coming.
Tacteel’s solo album under his legal name Jerôme Echenoz is in the can. Him and Para One have also recorded many tracks together in the last few months, expect to hear them very soon.
Chateau Marmont are in the studio recording their debut album. What we’ve heard so far is extremely exciting and totally pushing their craft to a whole new level. The original soundtrack to the beautiful French independent movie “Belle Epine” composed by Rob has been released this winter.
Surkin’s album is finally done.
Crystal are recording their debut album and… well, you get the idea: everyone is very busy in the studio.

Looking at all the Institubes artists, I see the most talented, diverse, curious, self-challenging, smart, progressive and forward-thinking group of people we ever had the chance to know. They’re the best. Anyone disputing that is either misinformed or a liar. Please keep supporting them.

Lastly, a closing event (= a massive party) is going to be announced very soon. Keep checking www.institubes.com for updates.
Also visit www.soundpellegrino.net and www.marble.fm to stay in touch with the gang.

HOCKEY MASK ELECTRO METAL?..

After the news spread earlier about French electro titans Justice returning to the spotlight we now have some comeback moves from another powerhouse group in the genre; MSTRKRFT.

The Canadian duo have taken a break from their Mortal Kombat score duties to drop the first taste of their third album and the single Beards Again certainly lives up to Jesse F. Keeler’s boasts about being their take on Led Zeppelin III with the group wheeling out the Marshall amps to blast some chugging, chunky guitar riffs and ‘80s stadium rock drum fills.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WDSwJ72EZI

While it’ll likely only feed the fiery disdain that many have for electro acts we think there’ll be one or two fans happy to hear MSTRKRFT without a bling’d out rapper over the top of them.

FAITHLESS THROW IN THE TOWEL...

I'm not sure I can take any more end-of-the-line type news today. Nate Dogg, Smiley Culture and one of the founders of KORG pass away, Institubes throws in the towel, and now so do Faithless.

A statement posted by frontman Maxi Jazz today says that after a decade-and-a-half in business, the group have decided to call it a day after they finish their remaining tour dates.

The statement on the band's website reads:

"After 15 years(!) and six albums(!!) I think we've probably made our collective point by now and that it's time to close the book and return to the library... We've had, with you, the most unbelievable, epic and moving experience, stretching over years and tens of thousands of miles... joyful, exhilarating and empowering, we never for a moment thought an affair could last this long. Or be this powerful. Never thought for a moment that the end of this journey would be left to us either... Quite naturally people grow, change and leave the things of youth behind them. You've not only brought us with you, but introduced us to y'children too! What're you like..?

The album 'The Dance Never Ends' was written and produced for you, as a thank you, but also as a goodbye.. the tour schedule has been particularly hectic as we attempt to visit as many territories as there are people who wanna see us.. And say thank you. If I devoted the rest of my life to the task, I could NEVER thank you enough. I have memories that will still be with me in my next life.

But, like when writing a song, you always just 'know' when it's finished... this is and was the "Thank YOU And Goodbye' tour and to be truthful, I really hope you just pick up the ball of your life.. And RUN WITH IT!! Once again, whether you bought or downloaded a cd, came to a show or told your mates about us... Whether from the beginning or just last week.. Thank you. You'll be in my heart forever. Listen for my voice in future lifetimes, I only grow in your shadow, you're the sun to me. One Love."

Maxi, Sister Bliss, Rollo and co – thank you for the music.
Love Mr Dirty Smart x

LAIDBACK LUKE SHARES HIS EAR TICKLERS…

Below is a transcript from the 'Windmill Wizard' chatting through some of those beats that just can't find their way out of this headphones...

A Tribe Called Quest - The Love Movement
You just gotta love the Dilla beats. The first time I heard this album the beats felt like alien to me. SO fucking big! The biggest beats I ever heard up to then.

Maxwell - Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite
This track brings back great memories. I have a weakness for Maxwell. It sounds so warm and sexy!

Magnetic Man - Magnetic Man
I'm just so in awe with this album at the moment! I listen to it on repeat. To me, a lot of new dubstep that’s been coming out sounds way too forced, like electro producers trying to make this style. Magnetic Man shows me how the real deal should sound like. Authentic stuff, very inspiring to me!

Stevie Wonder - The Number Ones
Such a living legend. Amazing touching songs we all know so well!

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
I've been a fan of Phoenix for such a long time. They have written some of the most important tracks of my life. The track called Love Like A Sunset on this album is probably my most favorite track ever. I see my whole life flashing by when I hear it.

Gaslamp Killer mixtape - Live From Japan
This is my favorite DJ! Mind you, it's not house but it's more like a lot of weird stuff. The man has amazing technical skills and is a great performer too. Go and Google him if you don’t know him!

Nu-Gen - Mopho (Hatiras Remix)
This is one of my favorite tracks to play out now. Hatiras is an amazing person and the one that switched me onto making music in Ableton. He had me in mind making this track and it really worked ha! Playing this in every set.

Benny Benassi - Cinema (Laidback Luke Remix)
One of my bigger new remixes to come out soon. Trialed and tested and looking to be amazing when it's going to be released.

Laidback Luke & Steve Aoki feat Lil' Jon – Turbulence
This banger has been bubbling under for about a year and finally it's out! We went for full energy on this; it’s such a monster on the floor!

Laidback Luke feat Jonathan Mendelsohn – Timebomb
It's going to be a year of doing more and more videos for me. I’m very happy with how the Turbulence video came out and very proud of the Timebomb video too! This track works great on the floor as well as in your living room, go check it out!

Luke's new single 'Timebomb' is out now on New State Music: http://bit.ly/gyvjRo

DIRTY SMART, TOP OF THE WORLD…

Despite my own personal beliefs, I am not arrogant enough to state (out loud) that Dirty Smart is the greatest brand the world has ever seen. HOWEVER; I challenge any label, anywhere, to have a picture in their marketing arsenal as great as this one...

Dirty Smart receives numerous pictures every day from fans getting up to all sorts of debauchery whist rocking DS. A lot of them make me chuckle, but this one made me think...

"NO. F*CKIN'. WAY."

This photograph was taken at the top of the mountain Kilimajaro. Rising 19,340 feet above sea level, Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the world’s highest free-standing mountain.

'PJay Heffi', you have earned a place in Dirty Smart history. I am completely speechless.

DEADMAU5 ADDS TO L.E.D LINE-UP…

L.E.D Presents deadmau5 Live was already set to be one of this summer's biggest events, with deadmau5 returning from the USA for his first ever outdoor act (and only UK act this year!), but now the line-up is looking even juicier. Joining him will be globe-trotting producer extraordinaire Mark Ronson, and Calvin Harris who, after collaborations with Dizzee Rascal and countless hits seems to up the energy to entirely new levels. And if that’s not enough to fulfil your needs, Radio 1’s very own Zane Lowe will be flexing his selection skills and rising-duo Nero, will be cranking up the pace with some dubstep devastation.

But that’s not all; the man of the moment, Skrillex, will be cooking up a treat at this year’s festival with some music that he describes as being electro, dubstep and glitch all in one big melting pot. DJ Hype and MC:IC3, DJ Fresh, Modestep and Hospital's Netsky will be repping the D&B corner, alongside original ninja Jaguar Skills. And, there's still more acts to be announced...

L.E.D festival takes place at Victoria Park in London on Saturday 11th June For more info info and updates go to www.ledfestival.net/deadmau5 or www.deadmau5.com.

DEADMAU5 TO APPEAR ON 'THE SIMPSONS'...

It’s a sign of the times as to how big dance music has become in the US that Deadmau5 is apparently set to cameo in an upcoming episode of The Simpsons.

“Spent the morning at a reading with the simpsons… So rad! [sic]” he Tweeted this week.

He'll join the likes of U2 and Aerosmith as a musical guest on the long-running show, and follows in the footsteps of Kanye West as a more modern musical star appearing in animated form (The Cleveland Show). It also follows on from his cameo appearance as the DJ at a fashion show in the hit series Gossip Girl.

Pretty random. If they aren’t writing him into an episode of Itchy & Scratchy, they’re crazy.

FELIX DA HOUSECAT ALBUM GIVE AWAY…

Dance music legend Felix da Housecat is giving away his brand new, full artist album ‘Son Of Analogue’ for free on the cover of the April issue of Mixmag. The dance music magazine normally comes with a cover CD mixed by a world class DJ, but this is the first time the free CD has been a full artist album. The album won’t be available anywhere else, only with Mixmag.

As one of the most influential producers in dance music, Felix da Housecat helped spread acid house in the late 80s and 90s and kickstarted electroclash with his seminal 2001 album ‘Kittenz And Thee Glitz’. When asked why he decided to give away his epic new album, the Chicago born star said:

“I could have easily given the album to a record label but I’m tired of that. I wanted to make it visual. Back in the day when you’d buy a record, you’d get to open it up, be a part of it, really enjoy it, feel it. I told my manager that I don’t want this online. I didn’t want my album to be just a link.”

Mixmag has been at the forefront of music journalism for over 20 years and championed Felix’s unique sound right from the start. According to the DJ, “the cover CD is a way of saying thank you for all the support Mixmag and the UK gave me when I was fighting to be heard. It’s going back to my roots, going to touch your earhole and penetrate your third eye. It’s crazy.”

Felix da Housecat’s new album ‘Son Of Analogue’ will be on the cover of the April issue of Mixmag, out March 17.

One should always follow their dreams, however is it right to follow them at the expense of others happiness?
Im not sure...

Lent for Atheists!

I'm really sorry that this isn't anything to do with fasion or beauty but lent has just started today and I have decided to take something new up as a hobby rather than giving something up for it because I really that depriving myself of something is good slef-reflection on myself or my life. Life is too short to not have what you desire the most. So, I've decided that I'm going to start baking as my hobby with my mum so that we can spend some quality time together doing what we both really enjoy doing, maybe it won't be just for lent though but we'll see how it goes.

I LOVE THE SMELL OF MIXTAPES IN THE MORNING…

BOOOM! Mustard Pimp have done it AGAIN!

Mustard Pimp - Catastrophe Mixtape Series Vol. 6

How to describe it...
Snort a gram of Tabasco and play chess with your severed fingers.

Mad props to this dark duo.
I’m off for a meeting with Satan.

Peace x

SKRILLEX CHATS HATERS...

Few artists have polarised opinion of late like LA’s Skrillex. Gatecrashing and dominating the Beatport Top 10 with his Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites EP, his dirty, distorted take on cut-up electro and guttural dubstep has found him equal numbers of fans and haters it seems.

Speaking to inthemix while on his European tour, he confronted the haters side of things, saying it doesn’t really bother him too much. “I always get asked what’s up with all my haters but the thing is I’ve barely ever experienced it,” he said. “I just don’t go looking for them and I don’t read them. I know that Dubstep Forum has whole threads dedicated to me, which is very flattering, but they don’t like anything that isn’t a square wave of filter and an 808 kick, y’know? And there was this thing on the Erol Alkan Forum where they said that I had all these ghost-producers, so I had to step in and post that time.”

He puts the hate factor down to a backlash against a success rather than on personal taste or dislike however. “I see it happen on forums all the time, like on Dubstep Forum they fucking hate Rusko, Doctor P – all the best guys!” he continued.” At one point they were worshipped and then the minute they become successful everything flips,” he said. “I don’t really care, I just want to make music. That’s my thing; making music that I love and that pleases me. Whoever may naturally connect with the music is just a bonus."

MICHA MOOR JOINS TEAM DS…

So, I'm sending out orders a few weeks ago and I spot something that makes me double take...

Name: Michael Moor. Address: Germany. Order: Big Beats.

Could this be an order from the legendary Micha Moor?!

Being the geek I am, I look at Micha's DJ schedule, learn the german word for 'images' ('bilder'), and check out every club photo report I can get my paws on 1 week after sending out his order...

Lets just say, the above picture gives me 'Sherlock Holmes' bragging rights!

Mad props Micha!

Hi!

Hey! So I'm really interested and inspired by fashion, beauty and make-up I have recently applied for a course at college to do beauty, fingers crossed that I hopefully get a place in September, I still have to go for a skills review yet & an interview so I'm really stressing out and worrying about it just in case I don't get a place and I'm left with nothing else to do but get a job which I really do not want to do. So yeah, I just thought that it would be a great idea to make a blog and share the things that I really love, a few hauls and my wish lists with you and maybe do some reviews too! I'm really looking forward to blogging and speaking to you all, I hope you enjoy!
